The photovoltaic panels are usually fitted onto your roof, however it is possible for panels to be installed in other locations.

The panels work by absorbing the sunlight and turning it into Direct Current (DC) electricity. Solar pv electricity generation is dependent on light intensity, not on heat or direct sunlight - so it works even on overcast days.

The electricity passes through a device called the inverter and is output as Alternating Current (AC) electricity. Isolators are installed which act as a safety feature enabling the electricity supply to be cut off should any maintenance be required.

The generation meter measures the total amount of electricity produced.

The electricity is then sent to the fuse box for distribution to run household appliances and lighting. If there is more electricity being generated than is being used, it can be sold back to the national grid. Read more about the feed-in tariffs.

The export meter records the amount of electricity used which is sold back to the grid.
